"The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art." ~ Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy #112
The Second Vatican Council defined the purpose of sacred music to be "the glory of God and the sanctification of the faithful" (Sacrosanctum Concilium #112), and this is exactly what we try to achieve in the liturgical music at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. We seek to glorify God through music of many styles, from Gregorian Chant to hymnody to sacred choral music to "contemporary Christian" liturgical music. We seek to follow both the letter and the spirit of the Catholic Church's liturgy documents in an effort to provide music of "dynamic orthodoxy."
Each and every one of us is a member of the most important musical ensemble at Mass: the sacred assembly! All are called to "that full, conscious, and active participation in liturgical celebrations called for by the very nature of the liturgy," a participation that is "their right and duty by reason of their baptism" (SC #14).

However, there are, of course, some who are called to be leaders of this ministry. The Our Lady of Mt. Carmel community is blessed with well over 100 musicians who give generously of their time and God-given musical talent to lead our community in sung prayer. Each ensemble is responsible for particular Masses, and all are invited to sing at other special liturgies throughout the year. Shared prayer is a vital component of every rehearsal; our ministry is grounded in service and devotion to our God.
If you are being called to serve the Lord through music, we are eager to welcome you to the OLMC Music Ministry team. Please take a few minutes to read about what we do. This website lists existing music ministry opportunities, but ideas for new areas of ministry are welcome. Read on, pray about your role in music ministry, and give us a call to join in making a joyful noise unto the Lord!
Singers and instrumentalists who wish to take part in music ministry should call Rex Rund, the Director of Music and Liturgy, at (317) 663-4007 or email rundr@olmc1.org to discuss the possibilities. Rex will meet with you to help you determine which ensemble or ministry is the best fit for your gifts, your schedule, and the parish needs.
Even if you’re not musical, you can help out! We need occasional help with music library work, repairing hymnals, etc. Days and times are flexible. Contact the music director or the parish office if you can lend a hand.
